Alice.
A step ladder, in three centimetres.
Alice is a folding step ladder designed by Michele Venisti for Indarte. Made from aluminium profiles and chrome-plated steel tubes, it is just 3 cm thick when folded: a practical object designed with its unused state in mind as well.

The project
Designing for the space left behind.
A step ladder needs to be available when required, yet it often spends much of the day unused. Alice addresses both conditions: the presence of the open object and the space it occupies once folded.
The design relates the structure to the folding action, seeking a compact volume with a recognisable identity. Linear profiles and metal materials give the object an understated appearance suited to everyday life.

The design detail
Compactness as a design detail.
Aluminium profiles and square-section chrome-plated steel tubes form Alice’s structure. The relationship between the elements allows the step ladder to fold down to a thickness of just 3 cm, as shown in the views of the folded product.
The close-up highlights the ridged step surface and its connection to the uprights. Burgundy finishes on the handrail, end caps and feet punctuate the metal structure and give the design a recognisable identity. Compactness, materials and carefully considered joints belong to the same idea of an understated object for the home.
