Tritatauro.

Marble follows the movement.

A white Carrara marble mortar that replaces pounding with a rocking movement. A base, a crescent-shaped grinder and a different way to grind spices and aromatic herbs.

The project

Rethinking the mortar.

Tritatauro reinterprets one of the oldest kitchen tools through a different gesture. Instead of moving a pestle up and down, a crescent rocks across the base: a principle closer to a small hand-operated mill.

Both elements are made from white Carrara marble. The base holds the ingredients; the crescent, inspired by a bull’s horns, gives the hands two ends with which to guide the movement. The form brings together material, grip and function.

The design detail

Rocking to grind.

The hands guide the crescent back and forth across the base. Its elongated ends act as levers, while the curved surface works on the ingredients without the blows of a pestle.

Texture is controlled by movement.

A few passes produce a coarser grind; continuing the rocking motion gives a finer texture. Repeating the movement allows the consistency to be adapted to its use in the kitchen.
